Intense pulsed light or IPL hair removal is a long-lasting or semi-definitive method of removing unwanted hair. This popular procedure has been around since the 2000s, using a state-of-the-art device that emits pulses of light that are absorbed by melanin. The heat penetrates the hair follicles to destroy the hair root and prevent regrowth. Intense pulsed light offers an effective alternative to traditional hair removal methods. In this article, we'll tell you everything you need to know about contraindications, proper conditions of use and the risks associated with IPL hair removal.

What side effects can occur with IPL hair removal?

It should be noted that most side effects of IPL hair removal are due to misuse of the devices.

According to the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (Anses), adverse effects can occur after inappropriate use of IPL hair removal devices: a tingling sensation, pain, redness in the treated area, or mild inflammatory reactions. In addition to these minor effects, IPL hair removal can give rise to serious risks such as pigmentation disorders, eye damage, and the formation of scabs and bulbs on the skin. In addition, poorly-practised hair removal can delay the diagnosis of skin cancer due to the denaturing of skin lesion colors.

In order to prevent these potential health hazards, the agency is addressing manufacturers with the aim of better supervising the use of these devices by consumers. Hence the entry into force of a European regulation on May 26, 2021 concerning the pulsed light technology market and the use of this technology. From now on, manufacturers must carry out tolerance studies prior to marketing. To minimize health risks, they must inform individuals about good practices and other precautions to take before using IPL devices.

Are there any contraindications to IPL hair removal?

Both men and women can undergo IPL hair removal on various parts of the body (armpits, bikini line, arms, legs, etc.), with the exception of the face. There are, however, a few contraindications to be observed for safe use and effective results.

Skin types

IPL epilators are generally suitable for people with pale, fair, medium-white, olive and light-brown skin. But some quality models, like those in our online store, can also remove hair from dark-brown or tanned skin. Please note that IPL devices are incompatible with black skin.

As far as hair is concerned, epilators can be used on a wide variety of colors. If you have blond, dark blond, brown, dark brown or black hair, you're in luck. Unfortunately, people with red, gray or white hair won't be able to achieve a satisfactory result due to the low contrast between hair and skin color.

Pregnant women

Pregnant and breast-feeding women are advised not to epilate with Intense Pulsed Light. This precautionary measure ensures the safety of the fetus and the mother-to-be. There are as yet no scientific studies on this subject, so possible complications remain unknown. Excessive hormone production can also alter hair growth, leading to the appearance of a pregnancy mask. Pregnancy masks are pigmentation spots caused by the high levels of melanin. As the hair bulb absorbs pulsed light, the risk of burns is high.

Caution is therefore advised during pregnancy. In the meantime, you can consult a dermatologist to find a temporary hair removal solution.

Recommended minimum age

The minimum age for hair removal with Intense Pulsed Light is 15, provided your hair is mature, i.e. hormonally regulated. Hormonal changes during adolescence can alter results. Minors must also obtain parental consent.

It is always preferable to wait until the end of adolescence, i.e. around age 20, before starting treatment.

Other contraindications

For your own safety, please do not undergo Intense Pulsed Light hair removal in the following cases:

  • under 15 years of age ;
  • taking anticoagulant or photosensitizing medication, with the risk of burns, hypersensitivity to light or depigmentation;
  • hormone treatments;
  • skin diseases such as cancer, psoriasis, herpes, etc. ;
  • skin abnormalities (albinism, vitiligo, scars, etc.) or hair abnormalities (down, depigmented hair);
  • application of cosmetic products, even natural ones
  • presence of tattoos on the area to be treated;
  • exposure to UV rays prior to hair removal.

Who can undergo IPL hair removal?

This hair-removal technique is perfectly suited to all sexes. While IPL hair removal used to be reserved for professionals (doctors and beauticians), today it can be performed at home with an individual device. You can purchase a quality IPL epilator on our site and carry out a session at home. But first, make sure your skin type and hair type are compatible with a device.

Is it normal if I feel pain?

Slight tingling and heating may occur during an IPL hair removal session. However, these unpleasant sensations are bearable and temporary. If you experience intense pain, you may be using the epilator incorrectly, or your settings may not be right. And if the pain persists after treatment, consult a doctor.

How do I secure my IPL session?

Ensuring that your session is safe not only guarantees that the treatment runs smoothly, but also that it is effective.

Read instructions carefully

To avoid any undesirable effects, please read your appliance's instructions carefully, and follow the instructions for use. By following the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations, you'll achieve better results.

Protecting moles and tattoos

Moles are melanocytes, which produce melanin. It is therefore advisable to protect them before starting IPL hair removal, for fear of burning. To do this, simply cover them with a white pencil or bandage. You can also flash around protected areas.

For tattoos, avoid using IPL on tattooed areas. This may cause irritation or even damage to the skin.

Other precautions for IPL hair removal

  • Caution is the best policy. Take these extra precautions for optimum safety:
  • shave the area to be depilated before the session;
  • clean with traditional soap;
  • use protective eyewear;
  • do not apply anesthetics;
  • avoid plucking eyebrows;
  • do not flash on the same area more than once;
  • allow at least one month for the next session.

Silky-smooth skin contributes to a wonderful sense of well-being. Intense pulsed light hair removal is a simple, practical solution for getting rid of unwanted hair. The accessibility of IPL epilators for personal use offers everyone the possibility of long-lasting hair removal. It is important to seriously consider the contraindications to IPL hair removal, to check compatibility and to follow the various safety recommendations. All this to avoid health risks, and to take full advantage of the impressive benefits of this innovative technique.
